Featured: The Charity Wedding with our Trash the Dress shoot

We took this Trash the Dress session literally and headed to a local junkyard. It was a ton of fun, so we are excited that it just got featured in Charity Weddings last Friday.

Now if you missed it the first time we posted it, check out part 1, 2, 3 or see what Jessica looked like in her amazing dress at the actual wedding here and here.

Memories: Jess and Blake

After the wedding is long over, one of the few thing to help you remember the day is the pictures. We love to see how everyone displays Pilster Photography photos from their special day. "Memories" will be an occasional post with our clients showing off how they have displayed their photos.

If you are looking for more, here is Jess and Blake's wedding, e-session or trash the dress here.

Everyone I want to introduce you to Reba, DeLand U Pull It's junkyard dog! She's very friendly if her owner is nearby, I wouldn't want to find out what would happen if he wasn't.

PART 2 of 3: FAQ: The brides view on how to (gingerly) trash the dress!

Jessica had told me about all of the research she had done and just how much thought she had put into trashing her dress. There was no way I was going to repeat all of that, so I asked her if she could give the other brides out there some tips and advice on "How to (gingerly) trash a dress." Wow did she go all out. I'll let you read what she had to say. -Chad

How To (Gingerly) Trash A Dress
By Jessica Steck

Selecting a wedding dress is like choosing your husband: you have to weed through all the rejects before you find the one that suits you perfectly. When the last flute of champagne is drained and the last song swayed to on the dance floor, you're stuck with the most exciting thing you've ever worn just hanging in your closet. Rejoice! You can once again zip yourself into that pristine white frock--and trash it.

I know--gasp. But, before you start spewing about what went into the handmade lace overlay atop your Vera Wang, read on. I discovered how to have a fun, down-and-dirty photo shoot and all my precious dress needs is a trip to a good dry cleaner.

First thing's first: create a concept. I started by Googling "Trash the Dress" and "Rock The Frock" and found that everyone has a different idea of what it means. Most of the sessions I came across involved bright paint, water or mud. Boring! I wanted to do something different. So I brainstormed and came up with the idea to be in my beautiful Vera Wang wedding gown in an environment completely opposite. My first thought was a landfill. My husband quickly told me I wouldn't last five minutes at a landfill. (We saw an episode of Modern Marvels a few days later featuring a landfill and he was so right!)

Then I thought of a junkyard. I pictured myself all dirty-ed up, wearing my dress and some black motorcycle boots, surrounded by broken down cars, dumpsters and old parts. I was excited to see the juxtaposition of the stark white dress thrown into the anything-but-white surroundings. Some brides choose to smear stuff down their dresses. For me, this shoot was more about juxtaposition and less about physically dirtying fabric.

Next, do some research. You need to know the exact fabric of your dress. How many layers does it have? What are they made of? A lot of this information should be found on the tag of the dress or the paperwork from your purchase, but if you can't find what you're looking for you can always call the store. If you get to know your dress, it will be easier to clean. My particular dress has a tulle netting overlay that can be really difficult to clean because of its delicateness. For this reason, we bought thin plastic painters' tarps to lay down to protect the surface of the dress. From what I saw, you might be surprised how resilient your little number can be.

Substances like grease are near impossible to remove from fabric, but your normal, everyday, run-of-the-mill dirt can usually be removed by dry cleaning or hand washing
. I saw a lot of online posts from brides who used washable paint on their dress and then soaked it in their shower and hung it to dry with no problems. Lastly, you want to give some thought to the type of things you might run into where you've chosen to do your shoot. I knew there was a good chance I'd come in contact with some grease because I was at a junkyard. If you're in a wooded area doing something with mud, for example, you should be careful of twigs and branches that can catch the whispy top layers of your dress and tear them.

Along the same lines of getting to know your dress and thinking about what it may come in contact with, before you do a trash the dress photo shoot it's a good idea to think about the level at which you are comfortable trashing the dress you got married in. I talked to my parents (who bought my dress for me) and asked if there was anything that would make them uncomfortable. Ultimately, they told me to do whatever I wanted to do, but I certainly didn't want to seem ungrateful. Mostly you have to be honest and realistic with yourself.

Whether or not you plan to pass your dress onto a cousin or future daughter, renew your vows in it or preserve it to hang in a closet for the rest of eternity, it's still your wedding dress. Figure out how you feel about it. Everyone's different. Are you sentimental about it? Is it just another dress? Thinking about this ahead of time will ensure you don't get caught up in the moment or allow a photographer to push you into doing something you'll cry yourself to sleep about later.

I was actually pretty set that my dress was going to make it out of the shoot without so much as a smudge, but I changed my mind that day and decided that if it had a few bumps and bruises for the sake of art they would serve as a memory of the photo shoot. We ditched the plastic tarps and I just went with it. Having not been careful at all, other than holding it up when I walked (black, dirty sand is not a good look), it really didn't get very dirty. The chapel-length train and under layers are pretty black, but I've seen worse from just a wedding reception. As long as you and your photographer know what to expect going in, you can always choose not to take certain precautions you came prepared to take.

Finally, you gotta commit! I am the girliest girl of all time and I was sitting on questionable car seats, leaning my face on headrests riddled with unknown substances and doing my best to ignore the spiders. Whatever setting you choose, you have to commit to what you're doing. Have fun with it and make it believable! You don't have to dive into a pool to get a great shot, but you can't be afraid to touch and interact and climb, explore and push yourself out of your comfort zone. Release your inner supermodel!

PART 1 of 3: Vera Wang goes to the Salvage yard as Jess does a trash the dress session in DeLand, Florida

So Jess messages me. "Chad I have this awesome idea, I want to do a trash a dress session." I always love when my clients have ideas and even more so when it involves having fun in their dress. I wasn't too sure where Jess was going to go with this though, because she has this AMAZING Vera Wang dress. "VERA WANG" You know expensive, not the type of dress that you actually trash!

"Yeah, I want to take it to someplace where they have trash."

Did she just say that?!?

"I've done my research and I know how to keep it clean"

Ok, so she's not completely insane, whew! She's actually still somewhat concerned about keeping it nice.

After talking about it a little bit more, I mention this salvage yard I know about. I love the little town of DeLand that I live in and there's this salvage yard I've driven by a couple thousand times, but never been in. How does that sound?

After getting out of our cars when we arrive Jess walks up to me and says, "Chad, this place is amazing!" "There are cars stacked!"

I tell her "I know" and grin because I'm guessing it's better than she imagined.

This green car was definitly one of the cool finds out there!

Come back tomorrow to read Jessica's side of the story. Have you imagined where you might take your dress after your wedding?

The Team!
I knew how awesome this idea was, but it hit late that we should actually put a team together! I started frantically making phone calls to some of the amazing people I've worked with in the past and I couldn't have been happier.

We are on the Florida Brides Blog & mentioned on the Rock N' Roll Bride!

The wedding of one of our favorite couples (Who are we kidding, they all are our favs!), Jess and Blake, was featured on the Florida Brides Blog today! It was an awesome wedding with so many cool little details like an Iphone cake and Starbuck like coffee cups with a "Jess and Blake" logo on them.

If you want to see the original blog posts you can check them out here.

We were also amazingly lucky to get a mention in the Thursday treats post on, one of our favorite blogs, the Rock N' Roll Bride. Kat loves to feature quirky, rock and roll related and outside the box weddings and events. This is the type of stuff right our our alley!

Our recent e-session with Paul and Stacy apparently fit into that definition with some Fender guitar ring shots and Stacy's really cool foot tattoo. Plus the couple was a ton of fun to hang out with and shoot in my favorite little town of DeLand.

You can find our one mention near the bottom under "♥ Fender ring shots & a foot tattoo"

Jess and Blake's grand exit! Part 3o3

Have I mentioned how much I love these two! It's great when people are as quirky as you are. On top of that they just open their hearts to you and let you document the day that is so special to them.

This is when the party get's started!

Awesome hairpiece!

Can you believe they designed this room in only a couple days because they had to change venues?

I the windows in this place are cool!

Guess where these two go for coffee in the morning?

First dance.

Yummy food from Puff N' Stuff

When I saw John dance with his daughter I started to tear up. You can see the happiness in his eyes and how proud of a father he is.

An iPhone cake! Way to go Puff N' Stuff

Oh my gosh it's Jess and Blake's wedding already! Part 2of3

I had this amazing e-session with them months ago (Part 1, Part 2 and the outtake), and it felt like the wedding was so far off, but it just crept right up and then slipped right by! Certainly glad I was there to capture the memories though and give them a chance to always look back on what a joyous occasion it was.

If you are looking for some inspiration for a rehearsal and dinner check out part 1.

What better way to start this off than with shots of the dress. Let's just say it had a nickname, "Vera"

Jess's amazing and crafty mom made these awesome hair pieces.

Check out the cool feather! I want one.

The shoes! Not too high though, because Jess didn't want to tower over Blake. These are from the awesome girls over at Solutions Bridal.

I love taking pictures of getting ready. It's so awesome to capture the transformation from normal to spectacular. Plus there are so many little fun moments.

Jess and Blake both work at the television station WESH 2 in Orlando. That's also where they met.

It takes an Ironman to get the cork off some of these champagne bottles. Being a triathlete also John and I got along well!

He even does shoe repair. This may need to be a new triathlon event.

And the most important shoes of all!

Even the painting couldn't take it's eyes off this stunning bride!

More bubbly.

A little moment just minutes before the ceremony.

and just 20ft away across the hall.

Look at that grin as Jess comes through the doors.

Have I talked about the floors yet?

Congrats!

They said they chose me because we are all journalists at heart. They both work for WESH and we had a great connection from the beginning. Have fun in Croatia you two!

Look for the wrap-up in the next couple days!

The return of Jessica and Blake, Part 1 of 3!

Yes I said 3. Their e-session took 2 posts (Part 1, Part 2 and the outtake), so how could I do any less for their wedding. Well I guess it helps that I also shot the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. So there are lot's of pictures coming!

The first day I'm going to start it out with the rehearsal.

Not often that I get to stand on this side of the officiant.

We were short a few people, so we had some stand-ins.

They look pretty good walking down the aisle together!

John, the father of the bride, is always joking around, it wasn't hard to find him with a big grin on his face.

Shoes! Oh, and how I love this floor. I shot a wedding here last year (Here and here) and just fell in love with all of knowles.

Just imagine that there is a veil over Jess in this shot.

Did I mention the floor?

The stand-in bouquet

Monogrammed mint boxes. Very cool!

Have to be on my toes with Jess and Blake!

Cerviche is gorgeous. When I get a chance, I want to go back there and do a portrait shoot! There are sooooo many little corners and the colors are beautiful.

Don't know if you caught my tweets about ceilings, but this is one of the images that made me think of it.

@ChadPil I don't know if many people think about it, but having a cool ceiling is important for venues. Especially when you have photogs that get low

The cake selection was fabulous! Whoever decided on them, did a great job!

And check out all of these event professionals that helped to make this happen!

Jess & Blake in Winter Park: The Outtake

I just have to say again how awesome Jess and Blake were to do their e-session. As I'm down on the ground to make some of the previously seen shots. These two are loving that I would lay down in the puddles and muck to make their picture. So not only do they get a few stills of me, but there is the corresponding video to the below shot.

Jess & Blake in Winter Park: Take 2

So after we let the balloons go, we needed a water break! We stopped into this little coffee shop and out back we noticed this cool courtyard.

Then things just got electric (Okay, bad pun)
